Dec. 22nd, 2009 @ 10:43 am Writer's Block: You're a mean one, Mr. Grinch!

Are there any classic holiday movies or TV shows that you look forward to watching year after year? What are your all-time favorites? Are there any you simply can't stand?

I try to watch How The Grinch Stole Christmas, the Garfield Christmas special, A Christmas Carol with George C. Scott, and Claymation Christmas Celebration every year. I don't always succeed, but those four are family traditions I always look forward to. Each one always puts me in a better mood every time I watch it.

On the other hand, and I know that for some reason I'm in the minority here, I can't stand National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. I've seen it once all the way through, and have no desire to watch it again.

  • 16:20 Just scanned TWO pages. Not sure if they'll both get done, but I hope so, since I'll be MIA on Monday and Tuesday.
  • 17:03 Oy. Photoshop runs... poorly... on this laptop. Dear Santa, BRING ME A NEW MOTHERBOARD NOOOOW.
  • 17:30 Ooooh-kay. I can't ink on this laptop. It isn't powerful enough to use Illustrator's blob brush. Hmm.
  • 18:35 Photoshop is taking upwards of two minutes to save this file. This is gonna be a looooong month.
  • 19:15 To those concerned: I need $200 for the board and $100 for RAM. This sounds a bit extravagant, but if I have to buy a new board ANYWAY...
  • 19:16 I could buy them myself in a month or two, but we'll be stuck with all-pencil comics till then, cause the lappy can barely handle Photoshop.
  • 20:29 Alright, comic stuff done for tomorrow. Now to prepare for my ROOOOAD TRIP! Leaving 'round 8 am for La Casa de Scrubbo.

  • 13:33 FUCK. Got a new comp tower, transfered everything from the old to the new and started it up... nothing. Eventually checked every wire and
  • 13:34 ...everything boots up perfectly when the 4-pin PSU cable for the mobo is NOT plugged in. When I plug in the mobo, the comp is super dead.
  • 13:34 A crapped out motherboard is NOT what I needed right now, since I can't, you know, buy a new one. We may be comicless for a while.
  • 13:56 Alright, so there's a minor brightside: webcomic readership always tanks during Christmas, so the lack of comics won't be THAT bad...
  • 16:27 Ooookay. Ancient laptop was resurrected. It has NOTHING installed... and I don't have Photoshop on a CD. #headdesk
  • 16:28 is throwing rocks at his dead motherboard. #merryfuckingchristmas
  • 16:36 GO GO GADGET CS4 TRIAL INSTALLER. (God, I need my real computer back.)
  • 16:41 Oh, and my scripts are on a SATA hard drive I can't plug into anything. Looks like I'm wingin' it! But there WILL be (bad) comics, so yay.
  • 16:50 Wow, the VGA-out on this laptop is... blurry. And slightly SHAKEY now that I think about it. Perfect for graphics work... yeah...
  • 16:51 A Positive Note: The new tower looks and functions fantastically. If only the motherboard inside it were functioning. #yeahicantsopbitching

  • 08:37 Got my Burst payment yesterday. Meager though it is, I can buy people things for Christmas now. Very very affordable things.
  • 13:05 Back home with Christmas presents and curry chicken katsu! #selfhighfive
  • 16:34 Huh. I forgot that I was building a wiki to use as the world's most awesome cast page. I forgot... FOR FOUR MONTHS.
  • 18:22 A couple comments on today's DS about Robyn's "list of awesomeness" inspired me to resume work on my wiki. is.gd/5qAQm
  • 18:34 I forgot that playing with my wiki (heh) devours free time.

  • 09:32 Whoops. I probably should've finished writing tomorrow's DS page before today. Stupid Flat Feet script distracting me.
  • 12:06 RT @jonrosenberg Okay, this needs to be a series IMMEDIATELY. bit.ly/6n0ss8
  • 13:32 Listening to a Big Finish audio drama with David Tennant wherein he is NOT the Doctor is really... weird.
  • 17:48 This page is taking too long to draw. I can't even imagine how long it'll take to ink. Stupid crapton of extra people.
  • 20:23 Spent half an hour trying to fix a crappy piece of art in Illustrator. Ended up saying "fuck it" and copy/pasted older (good) art instead.
  • 21:49 This is taking way too long ink. Oy. Also, this page is incredibly fanwanky. Whee.
  • 23:26 Ugh, finally finished inking. Now to force myself to color and letter. I'm very, very tired. Expect typos.
  • 00:27 I'm deeply pondering upload this comic half-colored. Must... stay... awake...
  • 01:03 DS is up and, yes, completely it's colored. *collapses*

So the Golden Globe nominations are out, which means it’s awards season. Since The Future Belongs to Undead Gods is going to dominate everything next year, I figured I’d take a look at this year’s crop.

I haven’t seen most of them, in part because we’re broke and have a toddler, and in part because in their obsession with being the first ones out of the gate the Globes are always announced before most of the nominees are in wide release.

Anyway, my biggest beef is the lack of Sam Rockwell in the acting category. I didn’t expect Moon to get much recognition, despite being one of the best movies I’ve seen this year, but his performance was one of the best I’ve seen in years.

Also, I highly doubt that Nancy Mayer managed to make something worth seeing, let alone a better comedy that Up.

I am happy, if not surprised, to see Kathryn Bigelow up for director. Actually, both the director’s whose movies I’ve seen deserve it, and I consistently like the work of two of the other three.

Happy with the three screenplay nominees I’ve seen too, although the exclusion of The Brothers Bloom, and Moon is a little annoying (not at all surprising, just annoying).

Beyond that I don’t have much to say. Haven’t seen enough of the nominees to have as educated of an opinion as I would like, so for now there’s less ranting than there might otherwise be. Come Groundhog Day though...

  • 10:35 The glory of writing a graphic novel: I can write three pages of someone walking around without dialogue.
  • 10:37 The three page, 27 panel epic of nothing brings me up to page 25, fyi. Now I'd better start drawing tomorrow's DS.
  • 11:38 Hmm. Do I try drawing the comic digitally, or do I just pencil on the back of another comic page?
  • 11:42 Decided to just double up. My real pencils are just a lot better than my digital ones.
  • 13:08 My ass hurts. I need a new chair.

  • 10:23 The recent MST3K fever reminded me that I still have my ancient "Amazing Colossal Episode Guide" from years back. Totally awesome.
  • 13:05 "The best part of wakin' up is a dead guy in the park!" Work on new Flat Feet continues.
  • 13:14 Hmm. For 16 pages, the small town sheriff's name in my script has just been "the sheriff." I should probably work on that.
  • 14:40 The hardest part about writing comics is trying to find a logical reason for action sequences to exist.
  • 15:35 It's page 19 in this Flat Feet script and people have just been talking. A lot. This could be a disaster.
  • 16:03 Toying with the idea of releasing the Flat Feet script over Twitter ever 24 pages for community editing. I'm kind of nuts.
  • 16:15 Inevitable Side Effect of Detective Stories: Several scenes featuring encounters with the secretaries of important people.
  • 16:59 STOP WRITING MORE PANELS PER PAGE THAN YOU CAN DRAW, JOHN.
